How to keep your Coachella wardrobe alive all summer long

coachella style

Coachella weekend one has (sadly) come and gone but what about the adorable Free People pieces you proudly rocked? Good news–even though your outfit may have been a little bit over the top for everyday wear, there are ways to incorporate pieces into your everyday wardrobe. From swapping a crop-top for a cardigan and trading your lace bra for a bikini, stay boho-chic all summer long with these easy tips for keeping your Coachella wardrobe alive.

1. Vintage Cropped Shorts: All the rage this year, keep your crops for the beach by pairing them with a more conservative shirt (tucked in is cute) and an oversized hat.

2. Headwear: De-hippie your pretty finds by pairing with a very simple outfit like a neutral colored top and jeans. Make sure that the headband is the focus of the outfit so stay away from crazy prints and big jewels.

3. Turn Crop Tops and See-Through Styles into Poolside Loungewear: Show some skin by the pool by using breezy tops and short crops to cover-up at the pool. Cute and cool, these pieces can also be paired with tanks and slips to make them a little less revealing for everyday.

4.Pair Long Dresses with Kick-Ass Gladiators: A huge fan of the almost knee-high gladiator sandal, tone down the style and dress up your long dress by pairing the two together. A little edgy, this is my favorite couple of Summer 2014.

5. Cover Up: If you’ve got a short skirt, shorts or dress, cover up with an easy breezy white button up. So summery and pretty, it tones down patterns and is an easy way to make revealing pieces more wearable.

Deal alert: Phoenix Premium Outlets bring the designer bargains

With a move and rent that is only increasing in the foreseeable future, it’s all about the bargain shopping right now. Sounds pretty rough, huh?  A few weeks ago, Phoenix Premium Outlets invited me to check out their digs and do a little shopping. Of course I was in. Brand new and with outlets AZ has never seen before like Kate Spade, this wasn’t your ordinary digging through piles to find a steal. Right off the I-10, the center boasts tons of high-end brands like Saks Fifth Avenue, J Crew, Brooks Brothers, Michael Kors, Tahari and more.

Very scenic with a modern vibe, what I liked about the open air complex was that you don’t have to walk miles to get from one end to another. Like stores are grouped together and unlike many other outlets, I saw a lot of merchandise that actually came from the big brand store.

Lined with plants, trees and comfortable seating areas, it was a pretty place to walk around while finding amazing deals. Of course, I had to stop into some of my favorites like Kate Spade and loved that they had a wide variety of bags and wallets but also clothing, tech accessories and shoes. J Crew had killer deals much better than their factory website and Off Fifth Avenue was pretty much a gold mine. Trying to be “good”, I passed up a Jonathan Adler tic-tac-toe set, Diptyque candles, and a whole lot of WildFox.

Seriously able to do some massive damage, I settled on Young Fabulous and Broke yoga pants for $53 with tax (originally $119). I’m obsessed with the boho brand and along with pants, they had a variety of maxis and tops perfect for summer.

Along with the already low prices, the center has a ton of events and a VIP Shopper Club that scores you extra discounts at almost every store. For more information, a full list of stores and directions, visit premiumoutlets.com.

Ross Dress for Less shopping challenge & a $25 gift card giveaway

If the miles of cars lining every shopping destination wasn’t a dead giveaway, Holiday shopping is in full swing. With a list full of get togethers and always looking to score a great deal, I teamed up with Ross Dress for Less for a little shopping challenge. Armed with a gift card and a mission to find a cute but comfy outfit for a casual Sunday brunch with friends from out of town, here’s what I walked away with for $52.

A big fan of Ross’s wide selection of shoes, I hit the shoe section first. With enough flats to last me a lifetime, I went with these designer moccasins because they match almost anything and provide a little extra warmth for cold winter days and nights.

Next, when I’m shopping on a budget, I often look for dresses. Buying one piece of clothing instead of pants, a shirt, a belt, etc. is usually more cost effective. Plus, because I wanted something hassle-free, this cotton designer wrap dress on clearance was a no-brainer. Also, with a quick jewelry switch, it can transition into easily into Spring which is always a plus.

Go bold with Sylca Designs jewelry & accessories

In an attempt to buy quality over quantity, more and more jewelry has become my main way to diversify key pieces in my closet. Adding a necklace or exchanging a bracelet for a cocktail ring completely changes the look and vibe of an outfit in a big way. My Mom and I mix, match and borrow each other’s jewelry all the time. Even though we have different tastes, we wear pieces differently (I have a wrap bracelet she wears as a necklace) and many of the same pieces work for both of us.

I was just introduced to an up-and-coming fashion company, Sylca Designs. Diverse and full of personality, the jewelry which looks and feels more like art is co-designed by a mother and daughter duo out of Philidelphia. The stand-out jewelry is something you won’t find anywhere else and appeals to a wide variety of fashionistas. The company gifted me their chevron cocktail ring which I love. Bold and made of extremely lightweight wood, I love this little gem.

Great for all seasons, this is a key accessory because it can translate from winter to spring and even summer and fall depending on what you pair it with. Here are some other  Sylca pieces I’m eyeing:

Fashion vs. Style: What’s the difference & what does your wardrobe say about you?

Magazines, E! News and many other entertainment media outlets are always asking, “Who wore it best?” These segments usually compare two celebs wearing the same dress in similar sizes pinned against each other for the title of “better dressed”. So what makes one dress stand out while the other falls short? It’s called style. More often than not, style and fashion are lumped into the same category. But, they are very different. Think of fashion as the clothes we see in magazines, what the manikins are wearing in the store windows and what is “trending”. Style is using fashion to create a look that mirrors your personality. It’s an outward expression of who you are and how you want the world to perceive you.

Let’s dive into some of the broad categories of style. Maybe you fit into one category, maybe you don’t. Or maybe a few pinpoint you. The best thing about style is that like you, it is always evolving and you can step it up with something as small as a lipstick or a pair of shoes.

The Minimalist

You wake up, take a shower and let your hair air dry. You stick to mellow hues, grays and whites and some people would call you a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl. If you dress up, you’re wearing a simple dress with a small, delicate necklace and just a dusting of makeup to bring out your naturally gorgeous features.

new kate spade

Is That Kate Spade?

The Bombshell

Hot pink lips, teased hair, sky high heels and a short dress to top it off. Ladies, you have met your match. The bombshell plays up her curves, doesn’t leave the house without a full face of makeup and isn’t afraid to show it all off. You’ve got the latest statement jewelry, a closet full of jewel-colored tones and leopard is your favorite “neutral”.

sophia vergara

Sophia Vergara aka Gloria.

The Working Girl

Pumps, a button up shirt and a blazer are your ultimate power pieces and you rock it out. You always look professional, put together and your closet looks like you just stepped into Ann Taylor. On the weekend, you prefer ballet flats to flip flops and you wouldn’t be caught dead in anything with spikes, skulls or a pop of bubblegum pink.

jcrew blazer

J. Crew. Enough said.

The Cool Mom

You’ve got the latest haircut, most expensive stroller and a Marc Jacobs diaper bag. People compliment you all the time asking how you do it all while looking so good. You’re that shopper that scours the internet and stores for a smokin’ deal on shoes and baby clothes and when you go out for a night on the town with your husband, you look hot.

katie holmes suri

“No I swear, the matching outfits were totally Suri’s idea.”

The Wild Child

You’re out to make a statement. Chains, leather, the latest biker jacket, you’ve got it. Your wrists are stacked with an eclectic mix of rocker jewelry and your favorite color is black. Nothing is too trendy, too cool or over the top. You want to stand out and you’ve got the personality to pull anything off.

nasty gal

“I just threw this together.”

If you’re still struggling with your style, it’s easy to get a grasp on what you want your wardrobe to say about you. Pick up some glossies at the grocery store, window shop, look at fashion blogs and see how they put outfits together. Once you’ve got a look you’re going for, shopping becomes much easier. Also, if you want to go a little over the top but aren’t a complete bombshell or wild child, get an edgy bracelet or buy that shirt with a little leather trim. It’s always ok to experiment, mix and match and even make some mistakes on the way to finding your personal style.

Repurposed treasures: Ruby Mae jewelry

I’ve written about it before, but there’s this amazing refurbished house in old town Scottsdale that was converted into a boutique and community hangout. Along with art classes and events, Jam Scottsdale also houses locally made jewelry, clothing, candles, home décor and more exclusively from local artists.

Shopping around, I came across Ruby Mae jewelry and had to have it. Handmade with a vintage feel, the pieces range from subtle to statement with choices for every style. I contacted Leah Williams, the creator and owner and she sent me one of her brand new custom Sweet Chick Necklaces stamped with “Ruffled Row”. What’s even sweeter than the silver chick charm and my little blog’s name, was that her Dad hand-stamped the necklace for me. A piece I will treasure forever, I love the whimsical stamped look with the modern chick that makes the necklace truly one of a kind.

Here’s a peek:

Obsessed yet? Well, it gets better. Leah hosts trunk shows for groups with options like DIY button crafts, bobby pins, ponytail holders and magnets, necklace length fittings, an all-out jewelry boutique for you and your friends and presentations on jewelry, gift-giving and more. Never too old for a birthday party or girls night out, a DIY night with Leah is definitely in the works.

Between her blog, shop, gallery, DIY ideas and more, I get lost on her website for hours. As a wannabe small business owner, Leah is a total inspiration. Since she was a little girl, she always loved adornments and made her own jewelry and t-shirts. In 2011, she was at a street fair, saw button crafts for the first time and knew she could make it big by adding her own design spin into the mix. A few years and lots of buttons later, Ruby Mae was born. Leah also works as a freelance stage manager for large televised sporting events and Ruby Mae was featured in a number of GoDaddy ads–talk about a cool chick!

Happy shopping and I hope you love your new pieces as much as I love mine. xo

My interview with Tarina Tarantino

When it comes to jewelry, I’m all about “go big or go home”. That’s why back in 2005 I fell in love with Tarina Tarantino jewelry. Handmade in the Sparkle Factory located in L.A., Tarina Tarantino pieces are iconic, edgy, the epitome of unapologetic, over the top glam.

Tarina, the brains and beauty behind the brand, was obsessed with designing jewelry ever since she can remember. A former fashion model, Tarina has always made her own, swoon-worthy jewelry noticed by friends and strangers alike. For years, she literally sold the designs she was wearing to girls who came up to her on the street asking where she got her jewelry and accessories.

After retiring from modeling and moving back to the United States from Europe, Tarina continued to design jewelry for herself and worked as a freelance makeup artist. Her big break came in the late 90’s when her now-husband Alfonso took her designs to a boutique and came home with orders from stores like Fred Segal and Jennifer Kaufman and the company was born.

Tarina-Tarantino-line-at-Sephora-Michelle

Still creating, designing and rocking fab fuchsia hair, I was lucky enough to get a mini-interview with the Queen of Sparkle. Here’s what Tarina had to say about her inspiration, designs and more:

1. When you first started creating jewelry and accessories, you made them for yourself because you couldn’t find exactly what you wanted in the marketplace. Is it challenging now to design for a broad range of customers and how do you make pieces that appeal to your fan base?

I do it in many different ways.  I always design what I feel is right for the season based on what I am loving at that moment.  But also, since I have had many years to get to know my customers, I know what they expect and what colors, patterns, etc. they prefer so I always take that into account.  That is what I love about the internet, you can connect directly to your customers. Especially for the beauty collections, customer feedback is so important, it really lets you know if you are hitting the mark. But even with all of that I always design from the heart and never release a collection that I do not love completely.

2. From putting your own sparkly twist on Hello Kitty to my personal favorite “I Love You, I Hate You” line, how do you come up with new collections?

I have sketchbooks full of ideas for future collections, but I also constantly look for inspiration in everything and everywhere I go.  What is most important to me is that each collection that is born in the Sparkle Factory tells a story and has a purpose.  In my new book The Sparkle Factory; the design and craft of Tarina’s fashion jewelry, which comes out in July, I have an entire chapter about design and inspiration and what I do to get inspired and make my collections.  I am always interested in how other designers and artists work too, it’s fascinating because everyone has a different way of working.

i hate you tarina tarantinoBHK06FH5Pink_detail

 3. You use a lot of different textures and materials like Lucite, crystals and organza to name a few and they all look amazing together. Do you have any tips for layering textures?

Yes, the more unusual they are apart the more interesting they will be together. Layering jewelry, for example, is much more interesting when you mix different chains, colors, or materials.  Try mixing gold, silver and gunmetal or wood beads with a strand of crystal.

 4. Was it challenging to add the beauty line to the collection? Did your background in freelance makeup artistry influence the products?

When my jewelry began to take off I was still working as a makeup artist.  I eventually had to put down my brush roll and work at jewelry full time, which was amazing, but I never forgot my love for makeup.  Creating a cosmetic collection was easy because I had all those years of dreaming up what I wanted it to be;  from innovative formulations to beautiful packaging.  My world of jewelry directly influences the colors and stories for my cosmetic collections, just like any fashion brand that eventually launches a beauty collection.  The only difference here is that I don’t design clothing….yet.

tarina tarantino kabuki brushtarina tarantino beauty

 5. If you could pick one piece you’ve ever created, what is your favorite and why?

The piece I was wearing the night I met my husband Alfonso. It was a hand sculpted clay and crystal cross on a strand of beads that I had also sculpted by hand.  He asked me about it and it started our conversation, that went on for hours.  At one point he even told me that I should be a designer if I could make jewelry like that.  He was so charming, handsome and sweet,  it was the moment I met my creative partner in crime and soulmate.

Thank you so much! I’ve been a huge fan for years!

Awww thanks, your blog is wonderful, have a sparkling day! xo, TT

As an added surprise, Tarina and her team sent me one of her favorite bracelets, Blondell, from the Starlet collection. Inspired by Silver Screen starlets of the 1920’s, the piece is totally unique and pairs perfectly with my oversized gold watch and stacks well with other bracelets. They also sent me their Conditioning Lip Sheen Lipstick in Penny Arcade. Already a huge fan of the sheen (I have a discontinued red shade that’s to die for), the sheen gives lips a pop of color with a dose of hydration. Penny Arcade is a glossy, peachy red shade with medium coverage perfect for summer.

Eighteen years later, business is booming, jewelry, accessories and beauty items are coveted by celebrities and the brand has expands every season with new collections. On top of all of that, Tarina’s new book, The Sparkle Factory; the design and craft of Tarina’s fashion jewelry, comes out in July and is available now for preorder on Amazon (I’ve obviously already secured a copy). Oh, and did I mention she has her own Barbie?
