For hippies, hipsters and happy people: Meet Heydaze Headbands

If you’re like me, it’s all about the latest and greatest. I want what’s new, what’s hot and what everyone else doesn’t have. My extremely stylish and talented friend Rachel Arnett just launched her own line of headbands and I’m obsessed. Her line, Heydaze, is dedicated to making unique, super comfy headbands that don’t hurt, give you forehead creases or headaches.

heydaze headbands review

Meet Rachel, isn’t she gorgeous?

Now, this isn’t just your typical headband. Rachel has been sewing her entire life and makes each and every product on the site. When we worked together, she would bring in items from her closet and alter them into completely different designs tailored to her size. Also, you should have seen last year’s hand-sewn hungry caterpillar Halloween costume—amazing.

So how does a girl go from Ad Agency to entrepreneur? With a free spirit and a ridiculous amount of talent, Rachel started Heydaze as a passion project a few months ago. Never ever thinking she would be making headbands or owning her own business, girl is beyond busy with orders and always adding new designs.

Her array of boho fabrics are hand picked from boutique fabric stores in sunny Sand Diego (where she now resides) or LA so you won’t see these patterns anywhere else. And the best part, each headband has a snapback in a vibrant hue that allows you to adjust the headband to custom-fit you or wear in endless ways. What’s even better is because she custom makes each and every headband, so for many styles, you can choose your snapback color. Here’s a peek:

Go bold with Sylca Designs jewelry & accessories

In an attempt to buy quality over quantity, more and more jewelry has become my main way to diversify key pieces in my closet. Adding a necklace or exchanging a bracelet for a cocktail ring completely changes the look and vibe of an outfit in a big way. My Mom and I mix, match and borrow each other’s jewelry all the time. Even though we have different tastes, we wear pieces differently (I have a wrap bracelet she wears as a necklace) and many of the same pieces work for both of us.

I was just introduced to an up-and-coming fashion company, Sylca Designs. Diverse and full of personality, the jewelry which looks and feels more like art is co-designed by a mother and daughter duo out of Philidelphia. The stand-out jewelry is something you won’t find anywhere else and appeals to a wide variety of fashionistas. The company gifted me their chevron cocktail ring which I love. Bold and made of extremely lightweight wood, I love this little gem.

So how does a girl stay healthy without stepping foot in the kitchen?  nékter  is a wellness brand and juice bar and café that serves up cold-pressed juice blends, smoothies, acai bowls, artisan salads, vegan snacks and cleanse packages.

With 20 locations across California and Dallas, I’m so excited to announce that three locations are opening up in my hometown of AZ!  Locations include 6137 North Scottsdale Road and 15425 North Scottsdale Road in Scottsdale and 7131 West Ray Road in Chandler.

My interview with Tarina Tarantino

When it comes to jewelry, I’m all about “go big or go home”. That’s why back in 2005 I fell in love with Tarina Tarantino jewelry. Handmade in the Sparkle Factory located in L.A., Tarina Tarantino pieces are iconic, edgy, the epitome of unapologetic, over the top glam.

Tarina, the brains and beauty behind the brand, was obsessed with designing jewelry ever since she can remember. A former fashion model, Tarina has always made her own, swoon-worthy jewelry noticed by friends and strangers alike. For years, she literally sold the designs she was wearing to girls who came up to her on the street asking where she got her jewelry and accessories.

After retiring from modeling and moving back to the United States from Europe, Tarina continued to design jewelry for herself and worked as a freelance makeup artist. Her big break came in the late 90’s when her now-husband Alfonso took her designs to a boutique and came home with orders from stores like Fred Segal and Jennifer Kaufman and the company was born.

Still creating, designing and rocking fab fuchsia hair, I was lucky enough to get a mini-interview with the Queen of Sparkle. Here’s what Tarina had to say about her inspiration, designs and more:

1. When you first started creating jewelry and accessories, you made them for yourself because you couldn’t find exactly what you wanted in the marketplace. Is it challenging now to design for a broad range of customers and how do you make pieces that appeal to your fan base?

I do it in many different ways.  I always design what I feel is right for the season based on what I am loving at that moment.  But also, since I have had many years to get to know my customers, I know what they expect and what colors, patterns, etc. they prefer so I always take that into account.  That is what I love about the internet, you can connect directly to your customers. Especially for the beauty collections, customer feedback is so important, it really lets you know if you are hitting the mark. But even with all of that I always design from the heart and never release a collection that I do not love completely.

2. From putting your own sparkly twist on Hello Kitty to my personal favorite “I Love You, I Hate You” line, how do you come up with new collections?

I have sketchbooks full of ideas for future collections, but I also constantly look for inspiration in everything and everywhere I go.  What is most important to me is that each collection that is born in the Sparkle Factory tells a story and has a purpose.  In my new book The Sparkle Factory; the design and craft of Tarina’s fashion jewelry, which comes out in July, I have an entire chapter about design and inspiration and what I do to get inspired and make my collections.  I am always interested in how other designers and artists work too, it’s fascinating because everyone has a different way of working.

i hate you tarina tarantinoBHK06FH5Pink_detail

 3. You use a lot of different textures and materials like Lucite, crystals and organza to name a few and they all look amazing together. Do you have any tips for layering textures?

Yes, the more unusual they are apart the more interesting they will be together. Layering jewelry, for example, is much more interesting when you mix different chains, colors, or materials.  Try mixing gold, silver and gunmetal or wood beads with a strand of crystal.

 4. Was it challenging to add the beauty line to the collection? Did your background in freelance makeup artistry influence the products?

When my jewelry began to take off I was still working as a makeup artist.  I eventually had to put down my brush roll and work at jewelry full time, which was amazing, but I never forgot my love for makeup.  Creating a cosmetic collection was easy because I had all those years of dreaming up what I wanted it to be;  from innovative formulations to beautiful packaging.  My world of jewelry directly influences the colors and stories for my cosmetic collections, just like any fashion brand that eventually launches a beauty collection.  The only difference here is that I don’t design clothing….yet.

tarina tarantino kabuki brushtarina tarantino beauty

 5. If you could pick one piece you’ve ever created, what is your favorite and why?

The piece I was wearing the night I met my husband Alfonso. It was a hand sculpted clay and crystal cross on a strand of beads that I had also sculpted by hand.  He asked me about it and it started our conversation, that went on for hours.  At one point he even told me that I should be a designer if I could make jewelry like that.  He was so charming, handsome and sweet,  it was the moment I met my creative partner in crime and soulmate.

Thank you so much! I’ve been a huge fan for years!

Awww thanks, your blog is wonderful, have a sparkling day! xo, TT

As an added surprise, Tarina and her team sent me one of her favorite bracelets, Blondell, from the Starlet collection. Inspired by Silver Screen starlets of the 1920’s, the piece is totally unique and pairs perfectly with my oversized gold watch and stacks well with other bracelets. They also sent me their Conditioning Lip Sheen Lipstick in Penny Arcade. Already a huge fan of the sheen (I have a discontinued red shade that’s to die for), the sheen gives lips a pop of color with a dose of hydration. Penny Arcade is a glossy, peachy red shade with medium coverage perfect for summer.

Eighteen years later, business is booming, jewelry, accessories and beauty items are coveted by celebrities and the brand has expands every season with new collections. On top of all of that, Tarina’s new book, The Sparkle Factory; the design and craft of Tarina’s fashion jewelry, comes out in July and is available now for preorder on Amazon (I’ve obviously already secured a copy). Oh, and did I mention she has her own Barbie?

My new go-to bag from Jalmodovar

We all know that I’m a huge fan of shabby chic and right now, burlap is a hot commodity at all my go-to boutiques. That’s why I’m head over heels with my new bag from Jalmodovar. Handmade by Janell Almodovar, she sent me a bag that could not be more my style (look, it even matches my chair).

jalmodovar etsy

Are you obsessed yet? The eco-friendly, repurposed burlap tote is not only major eye candy, it’s also functional, durable and can be worn three different ways. The bag has handles so it can be carried as a tote and also has an adjustable strap you can carry on one shoulder or go cross body. Plus, the inside is roomy and has pockets to stash your keys and phone.

jalmodovar

Featured in Real Simple Magazine, what I love about Jalmodovar’s unique items is the mixture of textures. Most bags, clutches, wristlets and cosmetic pouches feature burlap with a pop of designer and vintage fabric prints. Chic but casual, I love using my bag to carry my laptop and IPad for work and travel, but also use is as a tote for everyday use.

Ruffled tank top giveaway!

To kick off GreenLinebyK’s Charity Flash Sale this Thursday and Friday, I’m giving away this amazing ruffled tank (how appropriate, right?). Now, this isn’t just you’re average tank that comes in a 3-pack at Target made pretty with a little embellishment. Like every item in the shop, it is made from high-quality fabric literally from scratch starting with cutting the fabric to sewing on every detail.

Whenever I order from Kathryn, owner of Green Line by K, I get updates from her like “buying the fabric now” or “doing the cut tonight”. With all the hard work that goes into each piece and knowing that the item has not been hanging on a rack for 6 months touched and tried on by who knows how many people, makes it really special.

All of the hand-sewn items are durable and each seam is as straight as can be. Kathryn delivers nothing but perfection for all of her customers and really pours her heart and soul into every piece she makes. Like wearable artwork, the pieces are unique and something you won’t find anywhere else.

Most items are designed by Kathryn and a few come from her absolute favorite patterns that she alters a little to give them flair of her own.

Thirty One West brings affordable and stylish vintage

I love vintage and I especially love vintage when it’s online. As much as I love digging for great finds, It’s sometimes nice to have it all laid out for you and easy to shop. ThirtyOneWest is one of my go-to’s for online vintage shopping. I like their shop because they have a wide variety of wearable clothing along with accessories. Plus, they make their own eyeshadows which are extra special because they even choose and make every pigment color.

I got to try some of the eyeshadows out for myself and I love them. They are highly-pigmented which means a little goes a long way so they last forever. The colors can be mixed or worn alone and look silky-smooth on eyelids. Not only do I wear them as a eyeshadows, I have a small angled brush that I use either we or dry and turn the shadow into eyeliner. I line both top and bottom lids and smudge or use the eyeshadow on my top lid and smoke up the eyeliner on my bottom lid for extra drama. Look at how pretty these colors are:

Vintage shopping with the owners of Butter Toast Boutique

There are many reasons why I love my blog. I get to meet some amazing people and try some of the coolest stuff out there. Today, I’m really proud to share an interview I did with the co-owner of the local Phoenix and online vintage boutique, Butter Toast.

butter toast vintage

The owners Jasmine (left) and Traci (right) of Butter Toast.

I was lucky enough to sit down with Traci, one of the owners, and get all of her inside tips on shopping for vintage. Here’s what she had to say:

Ruffled Row: How did you get the idea to start a vintage store and how did you make it happen?
Traci: I’d have to say my business partner, Jasmine, is really to thank for my start in vintage retail. We teamed up almost 5 years ago as she was running her Ebay shop (formerly Billie Goat Vintage) and I was modeling for her. She was a huge inspiration to me, and I soon wanted to start my own online venture. After working together awhile we began talk of renting a studio space and joining forces. We originally just wanted to expand our online ventures, and possibly open up the retail space for First Fridays (a major artwalk in downtown Phoenix) and other major events. Our first night open was Nov. 7, 2008, and it was more successful than either of us could have anticipated. After that, we took it a step further and opened 3 days a week (then 5 days, then 6)…and since then we have been expanding and growing and we now feel like we have a very special home in downtown Phoenix.

Ruffled Row: Where do you find your pieces?
Traci: Jasmine and I are both vintage enthusiasts so we are constantly out shopping at antique shops, thrift shops, and estate sales collecting vintage goodies in our spare time. But primarily, we have a local wholesaler that we hand select our merchandise from. By hand picking every item that goes into our shop, it really allows our personal styles to shine through.

Ruffled Row: What is your favorite piece of vintage you own?
Traci: Too hard to choose!! I wear so much vintage, I don’t know how I could live without any of it! I have some gorgeous mid-century party dresses that make me feel sooo pretty when I wear them….but those aren’t for everyday wear. Lately, I’ve been wearing a lot of vintage maxi skirts…but there’s no way I can pick one single item as my favorite. I wear at least 1-2 pieces of vintage nearly everyday whether it be a blouse, shorts, jeans, skirt or a dress….my style would be non-existent without vintage!

Ruffled Row: If someone is new to vintage shopping what advice would you give them?
Traci: Try everything on and don’t judge an item by its hanger. Sometimes a vintage dress or blouse can look kind of ‘blah’ on the hanger…but you never know how wonderful it could look on your body unless you try it on! Look for colors and shapes that compliment your body. Fit can be tricky with vintage, and sizing is much different than modern sizing. I’ve seen shoppers come in with measuring tapes comparing our vintage items to their own waists or busts, and I think that idea is absolutely brilliant. Once you’re familiar with vintage shopping, you will more easily recognize the cuts and styles that are most flattering to your shape.

Ruffled Row: Can you give us any shopping tips on how to snag great vintage finds?

Traci: Persistence. Once you find your favorite vintage retailers, check back often. Most shops are constantly adding new items to their racks, and if you don’t stop in often you may miss something great. You can even ask your favorite shops when they put out new inventory to be the first to see the new goods.

You can shop Butter Toast anywhere in the world on their online shopping site. Get your vintage on girls!
